Effectiveness of Covod-19 vaccine will drop, govt urge to take booster shot
Its minister Khairy Jamaluddin said this following the effectiveness of the vaccine in preventing infection by the virus will drop a few months after the second dose.
“This is the reason why PICK (National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme) is providing the third booster dose.
“The administration of booster shots that is different from your original Covid-19 vaccine is practiced in many countries.
"In Chile, Pfizer booster shots given Sinovac recipients increased their inefficacy rate to 95 per cent,” he said in a Twitter post today.
Khairy, who is also Rembau Member of Parliament, said the booster shot strategy is vital especially during the reopening of the economic and social sector.
“If you have received the appointment for the third dose, the ministry urges you to attend and take the Covid-19 booster shot,” he said.
He added that as of now, the Pfizer-Biontech vaccine has been approved for the administration of booster dose for Pfizer and Sinovac recipients.
“We are also evaluating the safety and efficiency for other vaccine combination, which will be announced in a few weeks,” he said.
Malaysians above the age of 40-years old and those with comorbidities has started receiving their third dose, also known as booster shot.
The public will soon receive their third booster dose appointment via the MySejahtera application. – Awani
